MOHAMMED HASSAN MOHAMMED battled out the race for 8k with Pascar Owor in bright Autumn sunshine. It was interesting to note the two runners who went well clear of the field after 3k covered were both Olympians. Mohammed who ran 3:46.6 in his heat for Somalia in the London Olympics and Owor represented Uganda in the 800 in Sydney and Athens.
It was in the last of the three laps in Victoria Park that nineteen year old, Mohammed, who had only been in England for two months moved ahead of Owor.
Pascar Owor, who is enjoying the road and country rejected the idea of going for his third Olympics in London
"Unless you train very hard with good backing and a desire to go and win I don't see the point of competing in the Olympics just for the sake of it. Now I am looking to my future with my studies of sports coaching practise and English at Roehampton University."
Caroline Walsh (32) from Shaftesbury Barnet, was retuning to a bit of her 'Old form' when was first woman in a personal best time of 37.27. She was an English Schools cross country Champion in 1998 and National Junior Champion in 2000.
" Since then I have often had problems training, with illness and trying to get back from glandular fever'
She added. In this race I had no speed just doing stamina training for the Amsterdam Marathon. I virtually went through the 10k in the Great North Run at the same pace as I ran to-day."
Mohammed Hassan Mohammed and Zamzam Mohammed Farah, who ran in a Women's 400 heat in the Olympics were the only people to represent Somalia in athletics at the Olympics in London.
Besides the poverty, they had to endure a ' War situation' in Somalia with many building riddled with bullet holes and stopped often on their training runs along the dirt tracks. All that effected any capability of high voltage training for the World's biggest spectacle. It was a wonderful thing they were able to get round all that, somehow. Mohammed has friends in the famous Thames Valley club so he will be tempted to stay in the UK I would have thought!
Obviously also the new money prizes in the Metropolitan League cross countries for Juniors, could be a help if he stayed in the country, as he is still only 19. Of course the 'Great' Somalian Mo Farah has still a love for his home country but has competed for the UK for very many years now and unlikely to change his allegiance..
It should be noted that 35 year old, Henry Dodwell, several times a North London Cross Country Champion, was sixth of 184 at Victoria Park in 33.14 and is gradually rounding into form for the Highgate Harriers. He was in the club team that improved Highgate's position to being in the top half dozen clubs over the country and the road in the UK in 2012.
