Emma Nuttall (August 2017)

(Born in Edinburgh 23/4/92)
Emma Nuttall had a very good result in the high jump on the 30th of July, 2017, when she jumped 1.86, which was a qualifier for Scotland, for the Commonwealth Games in April 2018. That was done at Bedford, in the UK CAU & England Athletics Senior AAA’s Championships, 2017. The height she achieved was, only one centimetre outside her best outdoors of 1.87. The first three were Emma Nuttall (Easter District of Scotland & Edinburgh AC) 1.86; 2 Nikki Manson Giffrock North AC & West Scotland District 1.86, & 3 Emily Borthwick (Wigan District & Greater Manchester) 1.76. Nuttall is the Scottish high jump record holder and, a long time ago in 2011 she had her first taste of international Championship competition by coming 15th with 1.77, in the European juniors in Tallin, Estonia.

About her athletics “I am based at Loughborough. I train their under Fuzz Caan, The British High jump coach and, go home, when I can, to see my family in Edinburgh.”

Her start in the sport “I was 14” She added ‘I love the high jump’ and added “It was because of that I decided to stick with it, after doing a few events to begin with (As an Under 15 -1.61 high jump; 4’84 long jump; 13.1 for 100m; 27.23 for 200)

Regarding her 2017 victory at Bedford “I had come back from a long period of injury so, I was really happy with the result. My injury was a torn patella tendon in my knee, on my take off leg so that was my first full outdoor season since 2013. It was a bit of a relief today, especially with my take off leg.”

Did she have a heroine?
“As I was growing up I loved watching Blanka Vlasic. She was a great jumper.”

Regarding the different styles of jumping
“I have watched girls these days, that really run fast into the bar. It makes you realise you need to speed up a little bit. I am a little slow sometimes so, I want to get my speed up.”

Regarding her life in general
“I finished my degree in history in Canada at the Trinity Western University. Then, I came back last year and, went to Loughborough, to Fuzz for coaching. There is quite a big group of us. I started working with him last October”

What did she feel was her greatest achievement?
“My indoor PB of 1.88, I was really happy with that because, it has been a long time coming. At Bedford I did 1.86, I know it is not a massive height but coming back from injury and making the Commonwealth Standard I was happy with that’
She did add, regarding high jumping and the attitude towards the event “It is always hard for a high jumper, as you always end up with a feeling you could do more, even if you are extremely happy with what you have done”
