Night of the 10k PBs (May 2018) - part 5
Chris Law (May 2018)
From the very start of the 10,000 PB’s meeting, you could tell, as it was then bathed in beautiful sunshine, that the day would be a successful one for the managing organiser Ben Pochee.
In the first race 17 of the 28 competitors did personal best times.
Chris Law of Holmfirth, an under 23 athlete (19) won the race in 32:00.15 from Alan Stewart (Chiltern) 32:04.68; and Jonathan Carter (Tipton) 32:06.01.
Chris comes in “My team mate Shawn Smith (6th in 32:27.25) were working together and so when I went ahead of him I thought, I’ll just go for it now.’ I did 32:45 in Sheffield two years ago.
Mick Woods at St Mary’s coaches me. I am in the first year of studying ‘Health & Fitness’ so I am staying on. We have got some good runners on the campus like Ellis Cross, who will be in the ‘A’ race to-day and can run 29 minutes and, we are bouncing off these people that are better than I am’ ‘That was the idea of going to St Mary’s
‘When I first went to St Mary’s I had a niggle and got injured a bit over the winter.
Mick gave me cross training that kept me quite fit. I was 20th in the Northern Junior cross and 30th in the National junior at Parliament Hill.’
‘I first started running at 8 years old at Penistone near Barnsley.’
‘I came from a mountain background as well. I represented England a couple of times in the mountains. Two of the lads I was running with are running well on the track.
I think mountain racing gave me bases. People running well on the track, it gives them the speed to run well in the mountains’
‘I ran 15:37.55 at the BMC Grand Prix at Sports City, on the 12th of May this year. But I went through 3000 in 9 minutes then just faded. It is all about experience.’
‘Tonight for the first race I was not expecting to get the support I did also the announcements. It was special”
