He competed well at a good level as a young man
'My best event was the 400 metres. I used to run the Southern Counties because I was living in the South of England. I got selected for Scotland a couple of times, for small International meets. I ran the 400 against Dave Jenkins and the 200 against Allan Wells in Edinburgh but, needless to say, they won!. My best times were 10.66/21.4/46.88 for the 100/200/400'
'I got married when I was 24 and stopped when I was 26 then, picked it up again just before becoming a veteran Master at 40, then did relatively better because I was able to train and, managed to win a few World and European Masters Championship's so, comparatively I got better when I got older."
