Hannah Viner has had a busy few weeks racing, which included a result of 56:34 in the Cabbage Patch 10-mile road race. Over the fairly fast but hilly grassland course in the London Cross-Country Championships on Hampstead Heath, Viner beat 251 other runners to win, her time of 21:27. Next Highgate woman was 26th Ellen Donald in 24:02; then came 54 Lucy Bather 25:17; 73 Louise Faherty 26:13; and 76 Mia Parry 26:19.
Lauren Russell, who took up running as a sport at age 10, and whose mother Sabina Russell competes with the seniors, was impressive winning the Under 17's race in the London Youth Games. Her time was 11:47 in a field of over 70. She won her previous Met League race in her age group. Russell was Middlesex Schools 3000 track Champion.
Highgate Harriers men were fifth on the day, but the race was not considered a 'beacon' race by their manager. However they had some high placings out of the 426 finishers; 15th was Sean Renfer in 36:33; 16th Charlie Haywood with 36:36; 25 Henry Murdoch in 37:13; 30 Adam Horne 37:41; 38 Chris Hicks 38:03; 46 Farid Sousou 38:27; 49 James Barber 38:42; 50 Daniel Brewer 38:43; 53 Jens Sudmeier 38:52; 59 Jon Laybourn 39.08; 78 Julien Aliphat 40:11. It was interesting to see Highgate field events thrower James Rossiter get round 366 position in 52:29.
