On 21st January at the Middlesex Centenary Cross Country Championships, well organised by the City of London Corporation & Highgate Harriers on the Hampstead Heath course, the senior men’s and the under 17 women’s races were won by Highgate runners.
In the senior men’s, it was not long before Jacob Allen went clear and eventually won in 37:08 with London Heathside's Seyfu Jamaal second (37:40) and TVH's Michael Cameron of the winning TVH team, third (38:42). Highgate senior men’s team finished third overall. In the Championships - last held on Parliament Hill in 1974 - Highgate's second runner home of the 137 finishers was Terry Fawden (39:14) in fifth. He said the conditions were good with the sun out but remarked "there were some icy and muddy patches".
Lauren Russell followed up her wins in the Met League and London Youth Games with another great win in the under 17's women’s race, finishing first in a time of 22:28.
In the senior women's race Highgate team finished third, and the individual winner was Alex Mundell (30:28) of the wining TVH team. Highgate's runners were 11 Karina Thornton (32:52); 17 Sabina Russell (34:29); 26 Rhian Littlewood (36:20); 35 Natasha Cendrowicz (38:43).
Another gold came in the under 17 men's team with Highgate Harrier’s winning with 118 points, Harrow on 227 and Barnet & District 233. The first three Highgate across the line were 5 Liam Bailey (21:25); 6 Felix Cha-Kent (21:27); 7 Alex Mulvihill (21:38).
Highgate’s under 15 girls team also came first in their race with three finishers; 6 Kirsty Irons (16:02); 10 Leoni Delvendahl (16:30); 13 Lizzie Wortsman (16:58). A good result was by Arjuna Pflug who came forth in the Under 13 Boys in 11:11.
