On the 20th 0f January in the British Cross Challenge (Incorporating World Trials) Hugo Milner, the tall Derbyshire runner was leading the 10k but, closely followed by Tom Evans &, Mohammed Mohammed, with small gap to Jeremy Dempsey. Milner not only held on to his lead but went clear, up the final straight to win on Hampstead Heath, over the switchback course with some muddy patches in 29:58 a couple of seconds up on Evans of Lewis AC with Mohammed Mohammed third. Milner won the Cross Challenge and Euro Trials on the 25th of November and, was 4th in the European Championships senior race in Brussels on the 10th of December.
Hugo when did you really start to like to run?
He told me “ I started running when I was six years old. My sister Agnes did it and I sort of followed suit. I have been involved in athletics since then. I had a natural talent for cross-country and kept going. About 2 years ago I came back from America and decided to give triathlon a go. Right now I am trying to balance both.”
What do you feel were your outstanding performance on the running side so far?
“Probably in the recent European cross-country, being 4th in the individual race senior men. I did the same race the year before and I was 32nd
Have you got many heroes you admire?
^Alister Brownlee and Mo Farah with the running, Jacob Ingerbrigsten plus all the Olympic ‘Greats’ really I have followed.”
How many miles a week do you do or swim?
“About 60 miles a week and I am swimming about 25 miles a week and biking 10 or 12 hours a week;. So all in all i do about 35 hours s week.”
Have you got secret Olympic ambitions?
“I am going to try and make the Paris Olympic team this year, It is possible but I have only got a few races to qualify but, so far they are going well.”.
