Highgate’s Track and Field season had an exceptional launch last Wednesday! Our highly successful Open Meeting attracted the most athletes we’ve had since before Covid. But the fun started well before that, when we held a QuadKids event with some very distinguished guests. It was the occasion of the official re-opening for the recently refurbished track and our partners at City of London had invited the Lord Mayor along. Michael Mainelli is the 695th Lord Mayor of London, and as you can see from the photo, he very much got into the swing of things, delivering a stream of athletics-related “so bad they’re good” corny jokes, and encouraging our young athletes. After cutting the ribbon, our youngsters ran their warm-up lap of the track accompanied by Phil Norman, who competed for Team GB in 3000m Steeplechase in the Tokyo Olympics. In addition, the Lord Mayor unveiled a plaque which can be found on the wall below the terrace. Quote of the day, though, goes to one of the smallest children, who wanted to know why a pirate had come to the track.
These events took a lot of organisation, and special thanks are due to Brenda Myers, Graham Norris, Kate Jenrick, Ben Noad, Andrew Radwell plus a small army of wonderful volunteers. If you can help at a future event, Brenda or Jen would love to hear from you.
